The Art of Defensive Riding: How to Avoid Common Road Hazards

Riding a motorcycle means being more exposed to road hazards than drivers in cars. Practicing defensive riding can help you avoid accidents caused by distracted drivers, potholes, and unexpected obstacles.

Stay Visible

  • Wear bright gear and use reflective elements: Many motorcycle accidents happen because the driver of a car simply “didn’t see” the rider. By wearing bright colors or reflective strips on your gear, you increase your chances of being noticed, especially in low-light conditions.
  • Position yourself strategically in traffic: Stay out of blind spots and always assume drivers may not be paying attention. If you can’t see a driver’s face in their mirror, they likely can’t see you either.

Watch for Common Hazards

  • Potholes and Road Debris: A car might just bounce over a pothole, but a motorcycle hitting one can be catastrophic. Always scan ahead and be prepared to maneuver safely around road imperfections.
  • Gravel on Curves: Loose gravel can cause your tires to lose traction, making it difficult to control the bike. When approaching a curve, reduce your speed and maintain a steady throttle to keep balance.
  • Unpredictable Drivers: Assume drivers don’t see you and be ready to react if they suddenly change lanes or stop without warning. Keep an eye on turn signals, brake lights, and body language to anticipate their next move.
