Braking is one of the most important skills for motorcyclists, and knowing how to stop safely in different situations can mean the difference between avoiding an accident and being in one.
Front vs. Rear Brake
- Front Brake: Provides about 70% of your stopping power. Using it effectively means gradually squeezing the lever instead of grabbing it abruptly.
- Rear Brake: Helps stabilize the bike and can be useful in slow-speed maneuvers. However, overuse can cause skidding.
Emergency Braking
- Practice controlled stops: Find an empty parking lot and practice stopping quickly without skidding. The more comfortable you are with emergency braking, the better you’ll react in real-world scenarios.
- Brake in a straight line: When possible, apply brakes before entering a turn rather than mid-corner to avoid losing control.
Braking on Different Surfaces
- Wet Roads: Reduce speed and apply both brakes gently. Sudden braking on wet pavement can lead to hydroplaning.
- Gravel or Sand: Use more rear brake and ease off the front to prevent sliding.
